The whole idea of writing with a “conversational tone” is given new meaning when you think about texting.
I mean with emoticons, for example, you realize how absolutely imperative it is to say things with a certain tone and inflection, just to be able to have a “conversation.”
Otherwise, you forget one little smiley face and the other person takes it personal and you get in a fight over it! : )
You quickly realize that every word, every thought, every sentence structure, every idea you choose to share, matters, especially when you’re joking or flirting.
I mean it can get rather difficult! ; )
But with the smiley faces and lol and haha and jk and whatever other little abbreviations we use, it becomes a very deliberate conversation.
With practice, you get good at being able to create your “voice.”
And you can manipulate the text in such a way that influences the voice in their mind, so they can almost “hear you,” causing their trust level to skyrocket!
It’s like they can see you now.
By doing this, you influence their mind to receive your message in a totally different context.
You can take on a totally different tone.
You can take on a sympathetic tone.
You can have a sarcastic, pointed tone.
You can have a friendly tone. bro, ya, u ok? yo!
We talk in a way that demonstrates our voice. We have a voice. In their mind they can hear you. It’s like you’re talking to them.
And whether we realize it or not, we do this very intentionally when we text, and also in emails to our friends and family.
Or on Facebook or Twitter.
We’ve developed a voice.
And when you do this in your copywriting, it takes on a new energy. It’s has a whole new aura. It has a whole new magnetism. But you’ve got to know your audience well enough, to be able to talk to them that way.
(AND U GOTTA MAKE SURE UR USIN IT IN THE APPROPRIATE SETTING 2)
So then when you use italics, bold, and underline in your copy, the same way you use emoticons in ur txtin, you get a voice they hear and that grabs their attention even more.
So should you use emoticons in your copy?
Yes. When appropriate. And with caution.
When you know how to do it, and with practice, italics, bold and underline are a great way to create your voice.
It’s not just for highlighting certain power words, or calls to action anymore. : D
